Top sights in Prague
Dear traveler, I must start my story by saying that I spent my birthday in Prague this year. Amazing right? I know and what is even more impressive is the fact that, the hotel I stayed in offered free champagne in my room. Check it out, it’s called Hotel Golf and it’s around 15 minutes from the city center. We spent 3 days in Prague and I have to admit is as lovely as expected. It wasn't my first time in the city, and this made my stay a bit different, since it was really easy to find my way around.
What I loved about Prague?
Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí)
Here you will always find the famous trdelnik stands and also ham stands. Bear in mind that trdelnik is not of Czech origin but Hungarian, albeit still quite famous here. It is made from dough that is wrapped around a wooden or metal stick, then roasted over an open fire and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. Part of the experience is that you can watch the process of baking them and you should enjoy it once it’s hot but bear in mind that it can take a while in more crowded places. Don’t hurry the vendor because a partly done trdelnik is not good to eat. Also, Old Town Square is one of the best spots in Prague to find Old Prague ham stands. At night with the lights in the trees and the whole square take on a magical quality. Prague ham, Prazska sunka in Czech, well-known for its succulent flavor. The ham is smoked and grilled over an open fire at the stands and you should be aware of the fact that Prague ham is sold by the gram. In fact this is mentioned but many tourists don’t pay attention, just like me! Indicate how many grams you would like to have if not, you will end up with a big chunk which might cost as much as your breakfast, lunch and dinner for one day, all in one plate!
Astrologic Clock
After eating just walk a bit more and go where the Astronomical Clock chimes in each hour and after that you can climb the tower behind it and have a nice view of the city.
Petřín Lookout Tower – best view in the city
In order to get there, you have two options: walking, which can be tiring, but in the same it is like taking a walk through the history books or funicular which is cheap, fast and an interesting experience. Let me give you a little tip: if you have a daily public transportation pass, you don’t have to pay! This structure similar to the Eiffel Tower and is one of the best places in Prague to get an amazing view of the beautiful skyline. It takes 299 steps to get to the top, remember 299 steps, don’t say I didn’t warn you but reaching the platform is well worth it; The view from the top is magnificent! Also stop by the museum of Jara Cimrman on your way out, but keep in mind that you can only pay by cash.
Prague Castle
While visiting the Petřín Lookout Tower, we asked one of the employees there how to get to the Castle faster and because I asked a local, I got the best advice ever! “Hiking” for 20 minutes though the forest, got me to the castle in no time. In my opinion the best time to walk to the castle is at sunset since you can avoid big crowds and enjoy the beautiful panorama as the sun goes down. view above Prague got even better as the time to visit is in the night in order to have this magnificent view and have less people around. It is just magical!
Charles Bridge
Don't just cross the bridge, or if you want you can also do that, but first go up to the tower despite the number of the steps it’s worth it. The view of Charles Bridge stretched all the way to the Castle is stunning!
Memorial to the Victims of Communism
Located at the base of Petrin Hill on Ujezd Street in Mala Strana is this abstract series of statues dedicated to the victims of the Communist era between the 40s and the 90s. The original memorial has seven male status out of which two were damaged due to a bomb in 2003 and which appear to be disintegrating and decaying before our very eyes. It is to symbolize how political prisoners under Communism were affected. During the evening, the memorial is lit up providing an even more profound look.
Lennon Wall
John Lennon Wall is a wall in Prague, Czech Republic. Once a normal wall, since the 1980s it has been filled with John Lennon-inspired graffiti and pieces of lyrics from Beatles' songs. You can find it close by the Charles Bridge, so check out Velkopřevorské náměstí on your map.
Czech dumplings: food of the gods.
A delightful place to go for food will be, restaurant Bohemia. Honestly, it was not even on our list of places to go, but one day we were so hungry and looking to get something quick to eat while strolling around the streets, a very funny guy comes to us and with an even funnier accent he is asking us: “Are you hungry? We have traditional dumplings, very very good!” So, of course, we go in! I have to say, my boyfriend is so picky with food in general, that we almost starve ourselves until we agree on something to eat. I love to try new things, like the local cuisine, he is not that adventurous. Bohemia restaurant is now bookmarked in this European foodie map and we recommend this place from the bottom of our hungry stomachs.
The Ghost Statue
Pragues has an impressive number of intrigue and strage statues, and one of them is outside the Estates Theater, where W.A. Mozart conducted the 1787 premiere of his opera Don Giovanni, there is a heavy shroud around an empty space. This figure represents the opera’s character Il Commendatore, who appears as a ghost.
