Rolling Your Clothes Does NOT Save Room In Your Suitcase

Listen up! I know that the Marie Kondo method of folding tells us in a very calming, relaxed, and helpful voice to roll our clothes in the package and I know that it sounds about right. But while it might make your things seem more organized, it is NOT the best way to pack. It will not prevent wrinkles, and for sure, it will not save room in your suitcase.

Therefore, from my various trips around the world, I came up with a few tricks on how to pack your bag, no matter if you do it for a three days city break or a two months vacation. Therefore (drums please!) instead of rolling your clothes, you should…

• Fill in space at the bottom of the suitcase with socks, underwear, bras, etc. It will take up the odd areas, and it doesn’t matter if they wrinkle.

• If you are planning to pack hats, what will work wonders is putting your socks and the underwear around the hat and then fit the scarfs and the bras inside of it.

• Think flat! You will manage to fit more clothes into the suitcase if you fold them fewer times. This way, your clothes will be flat and have fewer wrinkles, and a nice layer, plus will allow some extra space for your vacation purchases. If possible, fold multiple items at once.

• The items that will most likely give you a hard time through security check are the toiletries, so make sure you place them at the top of your suitcase. This way, you will not be forced to rifle throughout your flat and pretty pile of clothes to get them out.

• Shoes are dirty no matter how much you clean them before packing; therefore, they get their area. Shoes cause the most wrinkles anyway so always put them in a shoe bag and store them in the upper section of the suitcase to keep them separate from the rest

• Leave room in your luggage because you might buy some fun souvenirs from your trip. Now, honestly, for some reason, it’s always harder to fit in the same clothes after you re-pack, it’s like they grow bigger after vacation! That’s why I am telling you it might actually take a bit more space than expected, on your way back home. Make sure to leave a little space in your suitcase. You won’t regret it.

• To be clear: NO rolling! Minimal folding and keep your clothes as flat as possible. If you don’t believe me, test it yourself, pack twice, and you will have your proof. I have been using this method for years, and people are always amazed by how many things my suitcase can fit. Don’t roll it ‘til you try this!

Sorry, Marie Kondo. But that’s just the way it is.
