Modern Art Museums In Amsterdam

Museums in Amsterdam - Modern works and art classics on two sides of the IJ

Amsterdam's cultural offer is overwhelming. Which one should you really visit? With their sizeable permanent collection and continuously changing temporary exhibitions, the below museums offer enough reason to visit every season.

Municipal Museum

The Stedelijk - as it is popularly called - on the Museumplein is not to be missed. In addition to the beautiful 19th century 'old' building, the striking white new building has been standing since 2012, called 'the bathtub' due to its shape. Inside, you can immerse yourself extensively in modern and contemporary art and design. The permanent collection is pervasive, the temporary exhibition almost always interactive. In addition to the established names, a new generation of artists with solo exhibitions is receiving all the museum's attention.

Rijksmuseum

Eight hundred years of Dutch art and history can be seen in the Rijksmuseum. From the Middle Ages to Mondrian, as they say. The division is (entirely) chronological, with paintings and historical objects telling the story of a period. From the Middle Ages on the ground floor, the first floor brings you to Vincent van Gogh, Goya, and Romanticism. One flight higher, you will find the old masters of the Golden Age, who have a place here in The Hall of Fame. For dessert, there is still the third floor, with art from the 20 e century.

The EYE

EYE is a real mecca for fans of film and film culture. The museum manages more than 40,000 films from all genres, from classics to cult films. The museum pays attention to different sides of film culture through exhibitions. There are famous set photos and film equipment from the past and present, and you can discover how a film is made. And of course, you can also 'just' go to the movies on one of the four screens. Extra tip: the museum shop full of great gadgets.
