Let's Stop Hating Valentine's Day

It’s very trendy nowadays to hate Valentine’s Day. Usually, the main reason is that it’s very commercial, flashy and with a lot of red everywhere. But at one moment in time, we all used to wait for this day, dear reader, even if you don’t want to admit it.

I don’t know if this year I will celebrate Valentine’s Day. Maybe yes, maybe not! Since, as a Romanian, we have our own traditional Valentine’s Day on the 24th of February, not celebrating at the same time with everyone else on the planet is not such a big deal for me. To be completely honest, I don’t even remember when was the last time I celebrated Valentine’s Day and I have to admit that every time I see those red hearts and the “made in China” teddy bears just lying there in the stores, I roll my eyes in disapproval. Until now, I realized that you don’t need a special day to celebrate your relationship and your true feelings, and actually this year more than in any other year, when I think of the 14th of February, it seems just a typical day. But this wasn’t always the case.

When I was in high school, I used to have butterflies just thinking that the 14th of February is approaching. Not because of the flowers, or the gifts or the candies I was getting, but rather because it was that only day in a year when you could get a clue that “he,” that special person, is into you and he likes you more than the other girls around.

If, in general you could say that the guy is shy, or scared to approach you, or too busy or any other excuse you could find him as reason for not declaring his genuine love for you, then on this particular day, he has to do it, there is no way you will find an excuse for him on Valentine’s Day.  This day is the perfect pretext to come with a box of chocolate candies or a flower so that you can understand clearly his message – you are his one true love. Therefore, I was always waiting for Valentine’s Day to get my answers to all my ‘existential’ questions regarding a boy.

We need these rituals to simplify our life as much as possible and to be more predictable in terms of life decisions. So, I propose to you, dear reader, that instead of minimizing a holiday which we find it stupid and insignificant, to use it to our benefit and to say that a simple “I love you” which we don’t have the guts to say during the whole year. To remember how long it passed since we went out to a restaurant with our better half, to buy those flowers that we don’t have the time or we always find an excuse for during the year. Yes, I agree with you, dear reader, that we do not need a specific day to do this, but I bet, for all the other 364 days per year, we just forget and get ourselves trapped in the mundane life we all have.

If you love someone and you haven’t told that person that for some time, or if you just want to have a special day with your beloved one, or if you just didn’t buy a flower for a long time, and you want to feel those butterflies in your stomach again just like in high school, give yourself a chance to have this joy this year. Take this holiday with all its kitsch vibe and put some red colors into the moment and just be grateful. Sometimes, it doesn’t matter in what glittery color the happiness comes packed in.

Why be a hater when you can just spread the love?
