The Best Instagram Spots in Iceland

I started my research about Iceland in 2018 – with all the unbelievable wildlife and picturesque landscapes, it was exactly what I wanted to experience on my own. This is pretty difficult to do as Iceland is still relatively untapped.

For now, I made a list of the most popular Instagram spots around Iceland be sure not to easily give up if Google Maps says you arrived at your destination.

INSIDE THE VOLCANO

A unique experience is going inside a volcano. The ride is 30 km away from Reykjavik and gets you to the ski slopes area. From that point, there is around one hour trek, doable even in the worse weather conditions, but bear in mind it’s closed during the winter period. To book a visit Inside the Volcano website. AKUREYRI

Akureyri is one of the biggest cities in Iceland, and it’s pretty common to see whales in this part of the island, so I definitely would recommend you to get around.

MYVATN NATURE BATHS

The baths here are a great alternative to the over touristic Blue Lagoon or the non-so secret Secret Lagoon. The only catch here is that this location is pretty up North, so you will need a few more days then just a weekend to get here.

ARTIC HENGE

I will be honest with you, and I thought the place is something like Stonehedge in the UK, whereas this place is under construction in 2019, but it looks pretty exciting, and for sure, you will get a fantastic photo here, especially if you come at sunset time.

GEYSERS

To see the geysers is pretty easy if you are only doing the Golden Circle. The Geyser is not so active anymore, so it’s pretty challenging to get a great picture here, but there are a few others, smaller that are very active so that an Instagram shot will be possible.

KIRKJUFELL MOUNTAIN

The mountain from Game of Thrones, Beyond the Wall, is exceptionally spectacular, being ideally positioned at the seaside, to fight the waves continually and to meet the flow.

The best point, however, also includes the waterfall. But because we are not talking about a spectacular flow, especially compared to other waterfalls in Iceland, we cannot give it a high score. But this frame is definitely postcard material!

Where is it: East of the island, on Grudarfjordur on the Snaefellsness peninsula.

NORTHERN ICELAND

Any spot in the North for me was impressive. From the beautiful swimming pool to all the beautiful mountain landscapes over the road. I think if you ask me, I would fly internationally to Reykjavik and from there, take a local flight to Akureyri, one of the biggest cities in Iceland.

From that point, either you go west or east for sure you will just come home with the most amazing landscape photos.
